Already on a Medicare plan?

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) covers vision care only when it relates to a specific medical condition — routine eye exams, glasses, and contacts are not included. Many Medicare Advantage plans bundle a basic vision benefit, but allowances are usually modest.

Medicare's annual enrollment periods don't apply to vision insurance — you can enroll with VSP at any time, and coverage typically begins on the 1st of the month after you sign up.

Common Questions

Quick answers about VSP individual vision plans.

Who can enroll in a VSP individual plan?
Any individual or family can purchase a VSP plan directly — there is no employer or group requirement. Plans cover the primary member, spouse/domestic partner, and dependent children.
Can I keep my current eye doctor?
VSP's network includes 40,000+ in-network eye doctors nationwide, so most members can keep the doctor they already use. You can also visit out-of-network providers and submit a claim for partial reimbursement.
When does coverage start?
Coverage typically begins the 1st of the month after you enroll. Once active, you can use your exam and eyewear benefits immediately — there are no waiting periods.
Which plan is best for someone in Medicare?
It depends on what your Medicare plan already covers. If your Medicare Advantage plan includes a routine exam, the EyewearOnly plan is the lowest-cost way to add a frame and lens benefit. If you have Original Medicare or your MA plan's vision benefit is limited, the Standard or Enhanced plan offers full exam-plus-eyewear coverage.
How does the EasyOptions choice work?
At each benefit period you pick one of three covered upgrades: free progressive lenses, free light-to-dark tinted lenses, or an extra $80 in frame allowance. You make the choice at the time of service, so you can match the benefit to that visit's needs.
Is enrollment online easy?
Yes. Use the secure enrollment link on this page to apply directly through VSP — or call David first if you'd like help comparing plans for your situation.
